Om kursen

Course Content

In this hands-on workshop, we will explore a style of taiko inspired by the drumming traditions of Hachijo Island, where two players share one drum and create music together by listening and responding to each other. You will learn basic taiko technique, rhythm and whole-body movement before gradually experimenting with this form of musical interaction and improvisation.

The workshop also introduces movement inspired by Ishinage Odori, a folk dance from Hachijo Island. Through simple dance-inspired exercises, we will explore how rhythm in Japanese festival traditions is expressed not only through drumming, but also through movement and the body.

The workshop welcomes anyone with an interest in Japanese culture, drumming and dance. Just bring your curiosity and an open mind. The workshop will be in English.

About Taiko

Taiko is a traditional Japanese drum built to produce a strong and resonant sound. In taiko playing the whole body is involved, combining posture, movement, focus and musical expression to create a dynamic and engaging performance experience.

Taiko can be performed in many different ways, from tightly coordinated ensemble pieces to more improvisational styles. Across Japan, different regions have developed their own rhythms, movements and playing traditions, often rooted in local festivals and folk culture.

Workshop Leader

Maki Kobayashi is the founder and lead instructor of Stockholm Taiko, a community for Japanese taiko education and performance. Originally from Japan, she teaches taiko with an emphasis on natural whole-body movement, relaxation, rhythm and connection between players. She teaches courses and workshops, and performs around Stockholm.

Maki’s approach is influenced by different Japanese taiko and festival traditions. She is particularly interested in taiko not only as a performing art, but as a living communal practice that brings people together.
